The Healing Power of Picture Albums

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

Recently, my mother was confined to bed. She had to stay off her feet to take pressure off her hip and rest for several weeks. She had had surgery on her hip so in order to be sure that the hip will heal properly she had to rest in bed. Everything was going fine but I was very concerned about something. My mother is a very active person. She simply cannot lie in bed all day long. The problem was that she could easily be bored and become depressed while lying in bed. I had to think of something that she could do to amuse herself in order to prevent depression.

I knew that my Mom just needed to do something that would make her think she is still vital. I had to think of something that I needed to be done so she would be proud she was helping me. It came to my mind that I had many photos, which I had just pushed in a drawer. They were still in envelopes. I remembered that I had purchased a number of picture albums over the years. These picture albums were still empty, as I had not had the time to fill the picture albums with pictures. I took the pictures and the picture albums and I brought them to my mother’s home.

My mom had troubles with her everyday personal needs so I had hired a nurse to help my mother while she was in bed. When I went to my mother’s home, I was astonished to see that the nurse was intending to go. I asked her what was wrong. The nurse shared with me that my mother is getting depressed. My mom had not wanted to do anything. She was not in the mood to talk; she just wanted to lie in the dark and quiet room. She had asked the nurse to keep the curtains closed. My mom didn’t even want to read a book or to watch television.

When I entered the room, she saw the box I was carrying. She asked me what is in there. I told her that there were picture albums in the box. I explained her that during the last twenty years, I have collected many pictures but I had not had the time to place them in picture albums. I told her that I needed someone to fill the pictures in the picture albums. At first, she was not very excited with the idea. She shared with me that it would be too difficult for her to spread the photos and the picture albums all over the bed.

I assured her that this was no problem at all. I rolled the bed tray over in front of her. When I helped her to sit up with her pillows, she saw she was sitting very comfortable. My mom told me that she thought I had brought too many pictures. She asked me why I needed so many picture albums.

The truth was that I had been collected these picture albums through the years. The photos were from the last twenty years that I have been married. Mom was not very curious about the picture albums and told me she would give them a look later.

I was almost sure that she would not do anything with the photos. I was very concerned about her condition. I decided to give her a phone call the next day. I was very surprised when a friend of hers picked up the phone and told me that that she was helping my mom with the picture albums. She asked me if I was able to bring more picture album so that they would be able to sort the pictures. I didn’t even expect her to organize the picture albums.

A few days later, I visited my mother again. She looked pretty well. She told me that she had organized my picture albums. I was very glad that she had enjoyed herself. I told her that I had to be out of town on business for several days so that I won’t be able to see her.

Ten days later when I went to see her, the box with picture albums was waiting for me. She had not only arranged the picture albums but she had had written notes and as many dates as she could on each of the picture albums. She told me that she and her friends were having fun while arranging the picture albums. Surprisingly, she was intending to start arranging picture albums for my sister next week.

Features Of Toshiba Satellite Notebook

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

I am a loyal user of Toshiba Satellite notebook. I have been using these for a number of years without any problem whatsoever. The model I am using now is M35-S320 which was introduced a few years back. It has become obsolete and I would be very surprised if you get this model at all in any store. You of course get one at one grand if you shop online.

The Toshiba Satellite note book that I use, may have become ‘obsolete’ but this laptop serves my purpose to the tee. In the computer world, there is nothing ‘obsolete’ - it is just that newer models have been introduced. My Toshiba note book is equipped with a 60GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM memory, and a Pentium-M 1.5 Ghz processor. It also carries a combined DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit, a 32MB NVIDIA Geforce FX Go5200 graphics card, a 15.4 inch TFT screen, and indeed a wireless modem and network card. These seem to be quite sufficient features for an efficient laptop notebook.

The name Toshiba Satellite is so because of its wireless network feature. The time when this was introduced, it was considered state of the art. These days of course, most laptops have wireless network facility. In spite of so many brands available in the market, the Toshiba Satellite has not lost out on its popularity. It gives instant internet access, as long as you have accessible network close by.

The Toshiba Satellite notebook is a reasonably mighty little laptop with the capability of handling big entertainment features like movies and computer games. Since it has an excellent built-in graphic card, speedy processors and a heavy-duty RAM memory capacity, it can handle the modern computer games with ease and show movies with superb visuals. In fact, I use my Toshiba Satellite notebook primarily for playing games or watch movies when I used to work in remote areas.

Towards the beginning of 2006, the brand new model of the M-series of the notebook was introduced, the M-65. This magnificent model has a bigger hard drive with a faster and better processor and graphic card. Though it retains the ’satellite’ name and can access the internet with equal ease as the previous models, the M-65 is marketed with more emphasis on its graphical capabilities.

However my only bone of contention with the Toshiba Satellite series is the poor sound quality. I grumble with my M-35 because of this inadequacy. But I know if I spend a little more, I can easily buy a set of speakers to boost up the sound system, if I ever desire that.

The Invention of Details, With A Final Q & A Period; The Invention of Everything, An Eyewitness Account

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

At last, we came to the final meeting. It was time to invent details like gravity and magnetism. Then we were scheduled for a final question and answer period. I was waiting for the right moment to bring up my idea that every planet that would have life that can read should come with an instruction manual.

“Well, what do you know? Here we are, at our final meeting. How long do you think we need?”

“It should go pretty fast.”

“Good. Did you prepare an agenda?”

“Yes, I did. I thought we’d start with gravity, move on to magnetism, confirm food, and then cover a few elements of environmental variety that we haven’t discussed, like snow.”

“Snow? What’s that?”

“Something that happens to rain when it gets colder. I’ll get to it later.”

“What about the Q and A session?”

“I believe we scheduled that for the end.”

“Good. Then, please, proceed.”

“Thanks. First, let’s look at gravity.”

“What’s it for?”

“Do we want everything we invent to fly off the agglomerations and disappear into space?”

“Of course, not.”

“That’s why we came up with gravity. It’s this special power - force, but I know you don’t think much of that word - that makes everything that’s not attached to the planet stay put.”

“Sounds essential to me.”

“We should definitely include it.”

“Where’s it come from?”

“Oh, there are a variety of sources, because we need it in general distribution to help hold the entire invention together. But on the level of each agglomeration, it’s basically generated when the planet spins.”

“Excuse me. Wouldn’t that usually make things fly off?”

“Not in this case. The way we’re working gravity is, it actually pulls things toward the center of the planet.”

“Have you done the math?”

“Yeah. It was pretty straightforward.”

“I think he’s made a case for gravity. Let’s say we just go with it? You’ve got the votes. Please, move on.”

“Great. Next, we have something called magnetism.”

“Purpose, please?”

“Well, I have a little list.”

“The top line will do.”

“Let me give you a really convenient use for it. If all goes as planned, one day we’re going to have these pretty intelligent creatures, standing on this relatively big thing we call a planet, without a clue which end is up. This invention will let them figure that out.”

“Really?”

“Yep. Of course, once they know which end is up, they’ll also know which end is down.”

“Cool. Go on.”

“Sure thing. Anybody interested in the technology behind it?”

“An overview will do.”

“Of course. We plan to give the top of the agglomeration one magnetic charge and the bottom the opposite charge.”

“The usual binary stuff?”

“Right. Plus and minus; right, left; male, female. So pretty soon after we have creatures who are smart enough to care which end is up, they’ll learn that if they put a little piece of metal on a tiny axel it will be attracted to the top or bottom of the agglomeration, depending on the charge that’s there at the time.”

“It moves around?”

“Over time it can switch, yes. But for starters we think the little piece of metal should probably point up.”

“Would you call magnetism essential or just a convenience?”

“If I were a creature, I’d consider it absolutely essential.”

“All right, granted. Magnetism it is. What else?”

“Food.”

“Why food? I thought we covered that in an earlier meeting.”

“Let me check my notes, boss.”

“No need to. We did. I just want to review what we decided and make sure we’re all in agreement. I don’t want to hear any ‘Why didn’t you tell us?’ stuff when the universe is actually up and running.”

“Go ahead.”

“We know the creatures need energy, and food is the way they’re going to get it. So let’s review our choices. We can either have it shipped in or each planet can provide its own.”

“Having it shipped in feels kind of artificial to me. Every day this train of food arrives out of nowhere.”

“It would certainly be odd, especially considering that we plan for the universe to function in a perfectly natural way.”

“I’m against food shipments. I insist that the entire invention be self-sustaining.”

“You’re sure about that?”

“Of course. It certainly seems like a basic perfection to me.”

“I agree.”

“Oh, me, too. But that only leaves one choice.”

“What’s that?”

“They eat each other.”

“The creatures?”

“Yeah.”

“How happy can that make them?”

“Well, that depends on how you look at it. If all you see is part of the picture, it may not seem like such a great idea. On the other hand, if you see that the creatures have their own lives but they also contribute to the support of other creatures, it starts to make sense.”

“I see, everything has a dual role.”

“Yeah. What do you think?”

“Sounds workable. But will they have a choice about what they eat?”

“The smarter ones will.”

“And?”

“I think we said they should be free to make up their own minds. That’s part of the reason for making them smart, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is.”

“So what will their choices be?”

“Well, they can decide to eat plants and animals or just plants. I don’t think many of them will decide just to eat animals.”

“Why not?”

“We’re leaving that simple choice up to the simpler creatures. The smart ones will realize that a well-rounded diet is much better.”

“What if the smarter ones don’t like the idea of eating other animals?”

“They could get by on plants.”

“What about the simpler creatures? Do they ever eat the smarter ones?”

“There might be occasions. We have to trust the smarter ones to watch out.”

“OK. I’ve heard enough about food. I’m for the self-sustaining setup. All in favor? Excellent. I believe you have another subject to cover?”

“Yeah. Rain.”

“We already covered that.”

“Yes, we did. But only as rain.”

“What else is there?”

“I want to talk about some interesting concepts we have about how it might transform itself.”

“Transform itself? Why would it do that?”

“We figure it will be heat sensitive.”

“Hmm, go on.”

“When it gets hot, it could float up as something we’re calling steam.”

“Steam?”

“Yeah. We derived it from the idea of a stream. Just deleted the ‘tr’ because we thought the idea of transformation is evident without it.”

“It works for me. Anything else?”

“Yes, sir. When the temperature gets colder.”

“Of course. Up, down; hotter, colder.”

“Obviously, two is one of your favorite numbers.”

“Yeah, I love what you can do with it. One is so limiting, but as soon as you go to two, wow, the possibilities really get exciting.”

“Go on.”

“Right. When it gets a little colder, it could turn into something we call frost.”

“Which is?”

“Kind of a cold coating.”

“That’s it for rain?”

“No, no. Two more things.”

“Hey, this stuff is really quite versatile.”

“Yes, it is. And fun to work with, like when the sky gets even colder.”

“What happens then?”

“We get something I mentioned up front: snow.”

“Yes?”

“Now, instead of coming down as plain water, the rain comes down as these really cool white flakes.”

“Hey, that does sound like fun.”

“What happens when the frosty flakes hit the ground?”

“Sometimes they pile up.”

“And?”

“The ground can get what we call slippery.”

“Is that a problem?”

“It can be. Things can slide around and bang into each other. Creatures can slip.”

“Uh-oh. I don’t know if I like that.”

“But it can also be a pack of fun. Creatures young and old and slide on it. On balance, I like it as part of environmental variety.”

“Be quite pretty to see all that white stuff coming down.”

“Yeah, but water is heavy. Won’t the white things hurt the creatures when it lands?”

“Not the way we’re planning it. The flakes will actually be quite light. That’s why we call them flakes.”

“How did you arrive at that term?”

“We combined ‘floating’ and ‘lakes.”’

“Oh, I see. Like floating lakes?”

“Right.”

“Lots of water, but light enough to float down?”

“Exactly.”

“Neat.”

“What about the long-term effects. I don’t want the land covered up with it forever.”

“Not to worry. As soon as the weather warms up, it becomes water again.”

“Good. Anything else for rain?”

“Just one more thing. We figured when the temp gets even lower, it could turn into something hard as a rock.”

“Why that?”

“Couple of reasons. First, rain that’s already on the ground as water. The hard stuff, which we’ve given the working name of ice, could form a layer on top of the water so, no matter how cold the sky gets, the covering would actually keep the creatures warmer.”

“I like that. We don’t want the water creatures to get too cold.”

“Especially not frozen. They’d be stiff and that would mean they couldn’t swim.”

“Nice. I like ice.”

“And get this. It will be slippery, just like the snow. So the creatures could have fun with it, too.”

“Sliding around on it?”

“Yeah. But we have a word for it that just seems to sound colder than skidding.”

“What?”

“Skating.”

“Ice skating?”

“Yeah. You should try it.”

“Whatever. You people are having entirely too much fun down in the lab.”

“Anything else?”

“Ice in the sky.”

“In the sky? I don’t know about that.”

“Can you provide some clarification?”

“Sure. When the sky is cold, the rain could also fall down as ice balls.”

“Ice balls? Why have that?”

“Well, if we’re really serious about everything happening in a perfectly natural way, and we agree that when the temps get really cold, the water becomes ice, then, if the water happens to be falling from the sky when it’s really cold, it should be able to come down as ice.”

“Can you just assure me of one thing?”

“What?”

“I need you to keep the ice balls relatively small. I don’t want any enormous round things hammering the creatures.”

“Let me make a note of that. I’m sure we can build in a control.”

“Anything else?”

“No, sir. That actually about does it for inventions.”

“OK, great. Inspired work, really. Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“Can we have a hand for the entire team in tech?”

“Stop, you’re embarrassing me.”

“OK, then. What do you say we move to the Q & A session? Question, anybody?”

“Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do have one. I can understand how the simpler creatures will be happy. They’ll just do the basic things without thinking too much about life in general. My concern is the smarter creatures. We decided they’re going to be smart enough to think about themselves, right?”

“That’s the plan.”

“Here’s the question. Will being able to do that make them happier? I mean, if it doesn’t, why bother?”

“Well, I think that depends on the creature who’s doing the thinking.”

“In what way?”

“Different ones will have different opinions.”

“Are you saying some of them might not be happier?”

“I’m saying, if they’re as free as we agreed they should be, yes, some of them are bound to be less than jolly.”

“I’m not sure I like that.”

“Well, being able to decide that is consistent with our variety principle. If we’re true to it, we should allow for some of them to be really happy and others to be really unhappy.”

“It certainly seems that way to me.”

“I have a more basic question. If they have all these processes going on inside them just to keep them alive, how are they going to have time to think about anything but the processes?”

“Oh, no problem. We plan to put all those functions on autopilot.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. We figure, why make the creatures think about the billions of things that will be going on to keep them alive. We want to free them up to think about their lives, do things they actually want to do, and, my favorite subject, think about and discover the given.”

“The given?”

“What the universe is made of, how it works, etc.”

“Now, of course, you’re referring to the creatures who become scientists?”

“Yeah. They’re going to have a great time, trying to figure out all we put into this thing.”

“What else are the creatures going to think about?”

“I think we have to deal with the hard question.”

“Which is?”

“Well, the smartest creatures are going to realize they don’t last forever. How is that going to affect them?”

“Hmm, good question.”

“I think they should just do what my grandmother always told me and that’s to count their blessings.”

“Yeah, but that only goes so far. Put yourself in their position. You love another creature. Then the creature you love - ”

“- careful now. Do not use the word I disapprove of, whatever you do.”

“Yes, sir. The other creature completes his or her life. What do you think? Happy, sad?”

“I’m surprised you’d ask. No way we want to invent creatures who would be happy at a time like that. How insensitive would that be? I would want creatures who would feel sad.”

“Me, too. But not forever.”

“Fine. But now let’s face up to the question in a general sense. How do they deal with the realization that none of them is going to live forever.”

“Well, let’s talk about that. Seems to me if they’re smart enough to consider such a question, they’re also smart enough to figure out the choices we had to make.”

“In what sense?”

“If every creature lived forever, how long would it take for the planet to fill up? After all, there’s only so much space.”

“Right. So pretty soon there wouldn’t be any room for new creatures.”

“Exactly. So I think realizing that should help them understand the overall idea we’re going with.”

“Which is?”

“Lifespans - for creatures, planets, whatever.”

“You mean, everything gets a certain share of the whole life of the universe?”

“Right. And if you value it - ”

“- Hey, right. That’s it!”

“What?”

“The way they’ll finally be able to think.”

“Go on.”

“If they value life enough, they’ll know what a great thing it is to be part of, even if just for part of the whole thing.”

“Sounds like a reasonable conclusion to me.”

“Right. They’d realize some life is better than none. In fact, that it’s pretty fantastic, even if it can’t last forever.”

“Makes a tremendous amount of sense to me. How much of a share do you think each creature should have? Want to set an amount?”

“Seems kind of stiff and unnatural to me. What do you say we just go with our variety principle?”

“I don’t know about letting that go too far. What about the creatures whose lives happen to ‘end’ very early?”

“Sounds like a sad event, doesn’t it?”

“Yes, it does. But if the creatures realize, as I do, that even a moment of life is better than none at all, they should finally be able to make peace with such a sad loss.”

“OK, let’s say they learn to do that. The question I have is, what will they think of us?”

“That’s a very consequential question.”

“I think that, after all is said and done, we can only hope they realize we made what we think are the right decisions.”

“Yes, I think that’s right. Let me wax poetic here for a moment.”

“Go ahead. We could use some poetry about now.”

“Let’s say one evening there’s this intelligent creature, who happens to walk down to a lake that doesn’t have ice on it, because the weather is warm. He or she looks up and sees the blue sky with some white clouds in it. The sun is just going down on one crinkle of land or mountain, and it’s sending this rosy afterglow into the sky. Maybe there are some sky creatures that happen to fly overhead. On the other side of the lake, he or she sees a big piece of leftover material, which right now we’re calling a moon, that has already made its appearance, because it’s where it can reflect some of the sunlight. Now, he or she notices that the whole picture in the sky is reflected in the water.”

“The person sees the sky looking up and looking down?”

“Yeah. Remember, we said that’s what water would do - reflect things that are above it. Anyway, he or she or both of them, if they happen to be a couple, stand there and realize that because of what we did, they can experience such a beautiful sight. What do you think will go on in their minds?”

“I think they’d say, ‘Wow, magnificent! I don’t know who invented it, but they sure did a great job.’”

“I hope so.”

“I have one more very interesting question.”

“What?”

“When one of the smart creatures ‘completes’ his or her life, or when these creatures just think about that happening, how much should they know?”

“Can you please clarify the question?”

“Well, should they know if something else does or doesn’t come after the lives they’re living?”

“That is a very interesting question.”

“Yes, it is. Why don’t we look at it from both sides?”

“Go on.”

“What if they know for sure there’s something afterward. What happens?”

“How much are they going to appreciate what they have?”

“Right. And what are we doing here, going to all this trouble to invent something wonderful if it’s just a stopover on the way to a better place?”

“Makes sense. Now, let’s suppose they know for sure there’s nothing after it. What now?”

“Hmm, any thoughts on that?”

“Well, it seems to me that the more they appreciate their lives, the more they’ll be able to come to terms with such a thought.

“It would seem that way. But what happens if we just leave the question open?”

“Can we do that?”

“I don’t see why not. We’re talking about what creatures know in the universe we’re inventing, not what they know about what might or might not be outside of it.”

“You’ve got a very convincing point there. They should be able to know everything that’s in what we’re inventing but what’s outside of it - ”

- should, at least, not be their primary concern.”

“Well, I think it only would be if they didn’t see much in what we’ve done.”

“So what if we just leave the question unanswered and let them make up their own minds?”

“Like it. Sounds perfectly appropriate to me.”

“And it goes with - ”

“- I know, I know, our variety principle.”

“I thought the variety thing was quite evident. I wasn’t going to say that.”

“Oh, sorry. What were you going to say?”

“That it goes with the idea that we said they should be free to make up their own minds.”

“Yes, it does. So let me recap. The smarter creatures can learn everything about what’s inside the universe we’re inventing and they can ask questions about what might or might not be outside of it.”

“I can’t imagine a better arrangement.”

“Neither can I. So that does it. My only hope is that these smart creatures appreciate what we invented enough to love whatever they want to think may or may not have invented it.”

“Hey, that brings up a really interesting question.”

“What?”

“Should there be a way for them to know about us?”

“What? They can’t realize we did things like make the place they get to live in magnificent - that blue sky, gold sun, the green plants, all the other creatures?”

“I guess if they’re as smart as we hope they are they’d be able to read a lot about us from that.”

“Right. They read backward from what we invented. It’s good, we’re good.”

“You mean, good overall? I mean, this freedom thing is going to allow for some really sorrowful events.”

“You want to abridge it?”

“No, not within the world they inhabit.”

“Right. Once it’s there, we butt out. How could they plan anything or feel any freedom and dignity if we were always stepping in and changing the rules?”

“I’ll go along with that. But let’s just suppose they want to express some appreciation for what we’ve done? What can they do?”

“What do you think?”

“I’ll tell you what. The first thing they can do is take good care of what we invented. I mean, show some respect for their lives and do the best they can with them.”

“Yeah, some respect for the entire invention.”

“If the smart creatures can’t figure out something that basic, I’m going to be one disappointed dude. And it’s back to the lab for you.”

“They’ll be fine. They may need some time to catch on, but, I can assure you, they’ve got what it takes.”

“You made sure of that?”

“We did our best. The rest if up to them. More would start to impinge on their freedom.”

“You’re right. Let’s go with that. They can show their appreciation by taking care of what they can experience. Anything else is an optional extra.”

“Agreed. We don’t need empty praise while they take their eyes off the ball. We’re above that, right?”

“We certainly are. However, I’m not too against empty praise as long as they do keep their eyes on the ball.”

“Whatever suits them.”

“Wisely said. I think we’ve got wrap.”

“Can I just ask one thing, boss?”

“Sure.”

“I brought the subject up before, but I can’t resist one more try. I think it might really be helpful if the planets that have life on them that’s smart enough to read come with an instruction manual. I mean, even the simple things they learn to make, like radios and TV’s, will come with instruction manuals. And there they are, looking at this big complex thing called the universe, and there’s no instruction manual.”

“OK. Let’s say for a moment we gave them one, and it had all the answers in it, including how to make everything they would ever discover how to make. Wouldn’t that be kind of an insult to their intelligence?”

“Interesting point. I mean, if we’re giving them brains that are appropriate to their needs, why would we take away the chance to use them?”

“Besides, where are you going to put this instruction manual? On a rock, where they’ll see it one day? It all sounds kind of unnatural to me.”

“I agree. It’s just another way of saying we don’t trust what we invented to function on its own. Besides, I like giving them challenges that make them use their brains right down to the last brain cell - or why did we put that last brain cell there?”

“I completely agree. So that does it. Can the instruction manual.”

“But, boss. Let’s go beyond the basics for a moment to spiritual stuff. If we don’t give them an instruction manual, they won’t know what to believe. They’ll develop all kinds of different beliefs, and that could cause problems.”

“Seems like a natural development to me. But I think you’re talking about the early days. Do we or do we not expect these creatures to last for millions of years?”

“At least, where they behave as intelligently as they’ve been given the ability to.”

“So in time they should figure out that the world they behold is one truth and that, if their beliefs grow out of it, they should pretty much agree on a set of beliefs. You care about the gizmo, you have all the beliefs you need, including how to make us happy.”

“And, hopefully, you can see that we believe in them enough to give them the freedom to learn things on their own, so they should read that as it’s right to give other creatures the freedom to believe whatever they want to.”

“As long, course, if they don’t hurt anybody.”

“I don’t know. This all sounds a little optimistic to me.”

“Sorry, we absolutely must trust what we invented. So forget the manual.”

“OK, OK. You win. No instruction manual. They have to figure out everything for themselves. Hey, how about if we compromise?”

“What do you mean?”

“My notes. Can I at least share them with the creatures who can read?”

“The meeting notes?”

“Yeah.”

“I don’t know about that. Won’t it tell them too much about what’s outside of what we’re inventing?”

“Hmm, I tell you what. I’ll think about it and let you know.”

“Thanks, boss. I can’t ask for more than that.”

“OK, then. Just let us know when you’re ready to launch the universe. I’d like to be there.”

“Will do.”

“Got a timeframe for the big birth?”

“We should be ready for a go in about a week.”

“All right! Looking forward to it!”

“I think we all are. See you then.”

So our final meeting came to an end. We had now invented the universe. Soon, we would be ready to rev it up and send it for a spin. And just think! If this universe worked well, who knows? We could decide to go into mass production. I was especially glad that the big boss might give me the go-ahead to release my meeting notes. And guess what? He finally came around. But, of course, now you know that, because you just read them. Enjoy the universe. We sure enjoyed making it. And remember, happy times or sad, we did our very best.

How To Use Oil Pastels - For The Beginner

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

Using oil pastels as a medium for canvas-based painting is no longer any different at all from using regular, petroleum-based oil paint. Oil pastels are easy and flexible to work with; offering artists of all skill levels an unlimited armory of creative potential. Most importantly, oil pastels are also considered a safe alternative to both oil pains and soft pastels.

For centuries, artists have had to give up oil paints, especially in their old age, as the dust associated with oil paint itself caused health concerns. In the 1950s, advances in the science of oil-like pastel paint made it possible to produce the first-ever dust-free alternative, but painters have never taken to it until recently, when they got the formulas just right… Over time, the blacks finally became dark enough; the hues finally became separate enough, and so on. The end result is that we now have a dust-free, ecology-friendly alternative to oil-based paints that can be made into tube or stick form, and perform just as well in every way. It’s taken over 50 years for science to get the formula just right, but in the 1990s they finally succeeded in producing a non-petroleum-based paint that had no harmful effects to the environment, and best of all, no dust!

The man who wrote the book on how to use oil pastels, quite literally, has a lot to say on this subject. In 1983, an artist from New York by the name of John Elliot wrote the very first article on how to use oil pastels, even before the formula had been perfected, for the prestigious American Artist magazine. For many years before that he passionately worked towards pushing paint manufacturers into speeding along the progress of their work towards perfecting the paint. If there is any one many behind the phenomenon of oil pastels, it is John Elliot.

Often noted as the world’s leading authority on oil pastel paints, his 2002 book, Oil Pastel for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter (Watson-Guptill publications) demonstrates step by step how to become a master of oil pastels. He covers every aspect of oil pastels in this book, far more than I can even hint about here. He includes the history, the chemistry, and the techniques of oil pastels, or dust free pastels as he would like us to refer to them, as the name ‘oil pastel’ implies that they are a petroleum derivative, which they are not.

Unfortunately, many artists will still have issues with the high price tag associated with these perfected paints. Perhaps they aren’t for everyone, at least not at the beginner’s level. Still, finding the right medium to work in is a very crucial first phase for any artist, so you really should give oil pastels a try if for no other reason than to make sure that the cost should not be justified. The following is a way to inexpensively make your own oil pastels, although the sharpness and overall quality will naturally not be as good as the professional grade.

Start with manufacturing a Gum tragacanth solution. (1 part gum tragacanth powder, 30 parts distilled water, & a cap-full of alcohol)

Simply put the gum tragacanth, available at a fine arts store, into a clean bottle and stir in just enough alcohol to make a soft paste. Then add the water, shaking it all together. The hard part is that tragacanth can’t be forced to bond within 2 whole days, only then will it absorb all the water and swell into a true gelatinous suspension.

Next, combine equal parts of dry pigment (of your favorite color) and zinc white, (also both available at that same fine arts store) with just enough distilled water to make a stiff paste. Once mixed, add just enough Gum solution (that you finished letting sit for two days) to allow you to grind it with a pallet knife until the paste is completely smooth.

Finally, deposit the soft color paste on a blotter or newsprint and let it absorb most of the moisture before shaping it into sticks. Use room temperature, or only slight heat, too much will cause cracking.

You can roll these oil pastels directly to pastel paper or cardboard and use in the traditional way you are used to. Again, I must stress that this method will produce a more basic, dusty version of oil pastels, not the expensive, but worthwhile grade that you can buy from your local art supply warehouse. Still, considering the low price of these materials, there is probably no better way to get started in oil pastels, and of course to reduce the risks when just trying them out.

If you haven’t yet given oil pastels a try, or if you know you like them but still feel they are too expensive, I encourage you to attempt this recipe a try. There are few mediums as rewarding as oil pastels on canvas, in both performance and product. You owe it to yourself to at least learn more about this wonderfully evolved medium, and of course how to use oil pastels.

Child Safety

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

When protecting your family, the safety of your children is likely your number one concern. Child safety is important at all times, inside or outside the house. Here are a few ways to maintain child safety in your life.

Child Safety Tip #1: Arm Against Strangers

You can’t be with your children all the time. If your children are old enough to play in the yard alone, or ride bikes around the neighborhood, you must protect them from dangerous strangers. When it comes to child safety, protecting your child from people who mean to do them harm is parents’ number one concern. Pepper sprays can effectively disarm a criminal and give your child time to run and scream for help.

Child Safety Tip #2: Arm Against Animals

Strangers aren’t the only ones who can do harm to your child. A loose dog or angry raccoon is an equal danger in many neighborhoods. Protect your kids by arming them with animal repellant when they leave the yard to play. Give them canine repellant and even bear repellent if you live in bear country.

Child Safety Tip #3: Make Some Noise

Many children are snatched right from their front yards. Sometimes screaming isn’t enough. Personal safety alarms will draw attention to your child’s situation immediately. If a stranger approaches and tries to attack your child, the child can set off their personal safety alarm, which will emit a high pitched siren to call for help. Often, the criminal will run away.

Child Safety Tip #4: Keep Them Safe From Fires

In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm’s shrill tone is often enough to rouse sleeping adults and alert them to the danger, allowing them time to escape. However, studies have shown that young children may actually sleep through such alarms. Doctors have found that children respond best to the sound of their parents’ voices. Hence the invention of the vocal smoke alarm. It allows you to record your own instructions that will play in the event of a fire: “Maddie, wake up. It’s Mommy. There’s a fire. Get out of the house like we practiced.” Make sure your child knows what actions to take in the event of a fire, like feeling doors for heat and crawling below the smoke. Have a designated meeting place for all family members to gather once they escape, so you can do a quick headcount and ensure everyone is out.

Child Safety Tip # 5: Watch Them When You Aren’t Around

It’s hard to leave your children alone with a nanny or babysitter. Are you sure you can trust them? Would the children tell you if something was wrong? Get peace of mind from a hidden camera that can monitor your children for you, either while you are away or even just in another room. Whether you have a spy camera in every room or just one, the technology is an excellent addition to your child safety security system. If you have suspicions that something is happening in your home without your knowledge, a spy camera can be your eyes for you when you are not around.

But aside from using high-tech child safety devices, increase your children’s personal security by teaching them how to protect themselves.

• Never get into a stranger’s car.
• Don’t even talk to strangers.
• If someone makes you uncomfortable, go tell a trusted adult or just shout “No! Help!” as loud as you can and try to run away.
• Stop, drop, and roll.
• Dial 911 in an emergency.

All these basic rules will help protect your children. Technology can boost child safety, but common sense is also a must.

What is the Mark of the Beast?

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

It is a common misconception that when the Bible refers to the Mark of the Beast, that the beast if Satan. A beast in prophetic terms is a religious, political or regal power. Daniel 7:23 “Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces”. Daniel 7:17 “These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth”. Revelation also clearly shows that there is a distinction between the devil and the beast. Revelation 20:10 “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever”. The second beast referred to in Revelation is a false religious system with political power.

The fifteenth century protestant reformers, such as John Wesley, John Huss etc all clearly stated that the fourth beast or “little horn” power of Daniel 7 that also correlates to the first beast of Revelation could be identified as the false system of religion, and persecuting power found within the papal system. The non-biblical doctrines instituted by the Roman Catholic Church had replaced many scripturally based doctrines with traditions of man. During the dark ages millions of people were tortured and killed as ‘heretics’ for now bowing down to all of the precepts of the Roman church.

The Bible also tells us that the “little horn” power of Daniel 7:25 would “think to change times and laws”.

One of the most notable changes implemented by the papacy was the changing of the day of worship that God had implemented, the seventh day Sabbath, with Sunday worship.

The papacy go so far as to say that the action of changing the Sabbath to Sunday, without any scriptural grounds is the ‘Mark’ of their authority, showing that they have the power to override even the institutions of God. Sunday is our mark or authority…the church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact. Catholic Record of London , Ontario, September 1, 1923.

When people say that 666 is the devil’s number, this is also an incorrect conclusion. 666 is the number of a man (being the leader of the political-religio system). Revelation 13:18 “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” It is interesting to note that one of the names given to the Pope, which is written on his triple tiered crown is VICARIUS FILII DEI, and that if you add up the Roman numerals for each letter it comes to 666.

Revelation predicts that at the end of time a second beast will arise that will be an image of the first beast, carrying out the same persecuting acts and holding the same false doctrines as the first. Revelation 13:12-13 “And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed” Revelation 13:15-17 “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

This shows that anyone who does not take the mark of the beast will be persecuted or killed. Then it goes on to speak of those true followers of God, who do not take the mark of the beast. Revelation 14:12 “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”

It is interesting that the differentiating factor is that those who are saved will be “keeping the commandments”, and that the “Mark” of the papal system is that they changed the fourth commandment, the Sabbath to Sunday.

It seems then that the religio-political system, when it comes to power will enforce, upon consequence of death, the observance of worship on the counterfeit day, the day on which the pagans worship the sun god.

Those that stay true to the Bible based teachings and keep the commandments have the following promise to look forward to. Revelation “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

7 Qualities Girls Like Their Ideal Partner To Have!

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

If you are a man reading this, you need to pay attention! There are some things that you need to know so that you can find a great relationship.

You need to understand what women want to have in their ideal partner. This may be you but you may have to make some changes in your life and this list is going to help you do just that.

1) You need to be a good listener.

A woman wants to have a man in her life that listens to everything that she says. It is going to make her happy and you never know when you are going to learn something important. You need to make sure that you are paying attention and using your best intensions when she is talking to you. Be considerate and even if it is a subject that you have no interest in, pretend anyway!

2) Make sure that you are asking your girl the right questions.

Take an interest in what she did that day. What did you do today? or How was your day? these are great questions to ask a woman because she is going to love telling you about it. Never tell her what to do or the right way that you believe to do something. You want to make sure that you are offering the right advice when it comes time to.

3) Do not give her advice on what to do all the time.

She wants you to listen and not to give out instructions all the time. Yes, it is good to offer help and to give support when you are asked. However do not push your opinions on her and certainly do not let her think that your way is always the right way no matter how tempting it may be.

4) Make good eye contact with her.

When she walks into a room, pay attention! Let her know that she looks great and that you are appreciating the way that she takes the time to make herself look great for you. She will love the fact that you are taking the time to pay attention to her and looking at her eyes and not at everything else. That is for later!

5) Make sure that you are telling her that you love her.

You need to give her affection. Every woman wants to have affection from her man. This is going to make her feel loved and special and why wouldn’t you want to do this? Giving her love and appreciation will make it all seem worthwhile and she will love you more for it and it will put her in a better mood too. What man does not want to put his girl in a better mood? The better her mood usually means that better your mood will be.

6) Spending time with your girl is very important.

You do not always have to do what you want to do. Make sure that you are taking an interest in what makes her happy. This may mean that you have to do certain things that you would not normally do but you have to think ahead. When you are doing thing that she likes, you will be making her happy and you may end up liking it too.

7) Actions are a great way to make a woman feel good.

Touch her hand and hug her at any given moment. Show her that you are affectionate towards her. Do nice thing for her when she is least expecting it. She will defiantly appreciate this. You want to surprise her with little things when you can.

Women love this type of thing even it is something as simple as flowers or candy from time to time. You can also give her a back rub at night when she has had a hard day. She will truly appreciate this.

Learning the right tools is going to be the key factor in your relationship with a woman. You need to make sure that you are giving her the right amount of attention that you can so that you are letting her know that she is important and how she feels does matter to you.

Mastery

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

All man’s well-being depends upon two things: one is the right choice of aim, of the end to which actions should tend, the other lies in the finding of the actions that lead to that end.
-Aristotle

Have you ever achieved a goal and thought to yourself is that it? Something was missing?

Maybe the answer to that question was ‘the journey’.

I want to shift focus from achieving goals to the path of mastery. Now there is no doubt that a great deal of happiness can be achieved through attaining the goals we seek (providing they were attained without having to break your own core beliefs). But there is a flip side. I believe a balance between achieving the goals and enjoying the journey is essential.

* What is mastery?
* Mastery fundamentals
* 5 keys to fulfillment
* Dabbler, obsessive, hacker and master

What is mastery?

Mastery is a state of being.

‘Consistency not perfection’ is the catchphrase from my friend Paul Stephen Lubicz’s Company ‘The Wellbeing Manager.’ Consistency is the mark of the master; it’s a state not a product. The minute you get locked into believing there is a perfect way you become less open to other possibilities, so growth stops and the self critical part of the mind becomes a monster because those impossible ‘fixed’ ideals can not ever be met. Don’t get me wrong though, consistently doing an average job will bring average results, it’s only through the approach of excellence can mastery be attained.

Mastery fundamentals

Recently I read an exceptional book by George Leonard called Mastery. In it Leonard emphasizes the point of living in the current moment, and even accepting and enjoying the plateaus.

How do you best move towards mastery? To put it simply, you practice diligently, but you practice primarily for the sake of the practice itself. Rather than being frustrated while on the plateau, you learn to appreciate and enjoy it just as much as you do the upward surges.

Goals and contingencies, as I previously said, are important. But they exist in the future and the past, beyond our current realm.

Practice, the path of mastery, exists only in the present. You can see it, hear it, smell it, feel it. To love the plateau is to love the eternal now, to enjoy the inevitable spurts of progress and the fruits of accomplishment, then serenely to accept the new plateau that waits just beyond them. To love the plateau is to love what is most essential and enduring in your life.

5 keys to fulfillment

Leonard describes 5 master keys to long-term success and fulfillment, as:

1. Instruction - Find a master teacher.
2. Practice - Masters love to practice, it’s their passion.
3. Surrender - Surrendering to your teacher and to the demands of your discipline.
4. Intentionality - Create the vision in colour.
5. The Edge - Push the envelope.

Dabbler, obsessive, hacker and master

Which one are you:

1. The Dabblers: Approaches each new sport, relationship, career with enormous enthusiasm. They love the ritual of getting started, new equipment. But they only seek instant gratification and when they reach that plateau they quit and look for the next bed to jump in.

2. The Obsessive: Makes the journey painful. Results are only what counts. When they reach the plateau the obsessive bangs, fights and does whatever it takes to knock through it.

3. The Hacker: Stays on the plateau indefinitely. Does enough to get by and stays in the comfort zone.

4. The Master: Simply anticipates the plateau which leads to power. They don’t fight it, stress about it or quit. Dedication to practice diligently, for the sake of practice itself. So finally when climbing that mountain be aware of the peak ahead, but don’t keep looking at it. Keep your eyes on the road, and when you reach the top just keep going…..

Do not think that this is all there is. More and more wonderful teaching exist - the sword is unfathomable.

Boat Review - Inflatable Boats

reannesblog3784 July 5th, 2008

There many different kinds of boat suitable for ones need and one of them can be inflatable boats. These boats are usually very light-weighted and constructed with flexible tubes at the gunwale. They are often designed to be portable by being deflated and packed into a small volume allowing them to be used as life rafts for boats or aircraft or simply so that they can easily be transported to water. Boats may have rubber floors, either plain or inflatable, or they may include steel, wood or aluminum sheets for rigidity. The tubes are made of rubberized, synthetic sheets of Hypalon or PVC to provide light-weight and secure buoyancy. The tubes are often constructed in separate sections, each with a valve to add or remove air, to reduce the effect of a puncture. Should one section puncture it is quite possible to repair it while still underway.

More extensive inflatable boat repairs - due to pinholes, punctures, peeling, leaks or worn fabric - can be done easily and inexpensively in dry dock using new innovative two-stage synthetic rubber coatings (SRC). Some inflatable boats have an inflated keel to create a groove along the line of the hull improving the hull’s wave cutting and turning performance. Due to the weight, it is very easy to cause an inflatable boat to start hydroplaning, thus making it faster than the engine would allow when the hull is operating in displacement mode. The rigid-hulled inflatable boat is a development of the inflatable boat.

Due to the speed, the portability and the weight, inflatable boats are used extensively in tending operations in port and at sea, recreational water skiing, commercial fishing, and mostly as Rescue crafts. These can be restored or even repaired if they are subjected to a great deal of wear and tear from the elements such as water and sun. As these products aggressively adhere to the damaged Hypalon or PVC shell can fix virtually any surface damage through a unique chemical bonding between the undercoat and topcoat that permanently vulcanizes the two rubber coatings together to make the inflatable as good as new. But as these kind of boats are very cheap they are mostly replaced by a new one.
