How To Decide What Used Car To Buy

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

The majority of people who wish to buy a used car have a clear picture in their mind of the type of car that they want, or at the very least some idea of whether they want a saloon or a hatchback. However by the time they have visited the showroom they can leave the forecourt driving away something very different from what they envisaged.

The reason behind this could be the salesman persuading you away from what you know is the right choice or you simply buy on impulse only to realise your mistake later. Here are some practical tips to help ensure you don’t make a big mistake when it comes to purchasing your car.

The first thing you should take into account is the size of the car; factors to take into consideration here are the size of your garage or drive and whether or not you have a family. If you have a family then purchasing a small two seated model is probably not the right choice. The same applies if you have limited space as then you aren’t going to be able to fit a big car into it.

The size is also determined by the build you are, for example if you are a tall person then you will have to ensure that you have adequate room, you don’t want to have to open the sunroof and stick out your head in order to see where you are going.

Take into account what it is that you need the car for. Are you going to be towing a caravan or attaching a trailer to it on a regular basis? If you are then you should consider a car with a bigger engine such as a four wheel drive. If you only want something to run about in the city then your choice might be better suited to a smaller hatchback model. The car you choose should fit in with your lifestyle.

Another important factor that you should always take into account when considering the type of car is how much it will cost to insure. The size, make and model of the car are all factors that are taken into consideration when it comes to determining the quote for your premium for the car insurance.

Finally, you have the choice of going for a petrol or diesel model; there are many advantages to choosing a diesel model rather than petrol. The diesel engine is considered to be more reliable and the fuel is more economical. However there are bad points too and these include the engine of the car being worked harder which means a major overhaul. Cars that run on diesel are also often overpriced and they aren’t considered to be environmentally friendly when compared to petrol engines.

What to Consider When Choosing a New York Moving Company

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Are you planning on moving this year? Each year, a large number of individuals and families make the decision to relocate. If you are planning on becoming one of those individuals, there are a number of important factors that you should first consider. One of those things involves the hiring of a moving company.

If you are moving to New York or moving from New York, you may want to consider hiring the services of a New York moving company. Most individuals and families make the decision to hire a moving company because it is easier on them. A moving company allows most relocating individuals and families to continue about their daily activities, without having to worry about how their belongings will get from one place to another. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you are advised to, at least, consider using a New York moving company.

To hire a New York moving company, you will first have to familiarize yourself with all of your available options. You can do so by examining your local phone book, especially if you already reside in the New York area, or you can also use the internet. Whichever search method you choose, it is likely that you will find a large number of results. These results are likely to include a number of different New York moving companies. Before deciding on one particular New York moving company, it is important that you examine a number of factors. These factors should include the cost of services, the type of services offered, and the area that each moving company focuses on.

Most New York moving companies will cover a wide portion of New York State. In fact, you should also be able to find at least one New York moving company that will help you move to or from another state. The distance that a New York moving company covers is important when choosing a company to do business with. This is because you will not want to spend your time researching a New York moving company that is unable to offer you assistance.

It is also important to examine the cost of services. You will find, in most cases, that each New York moving company sets their own fees. These fees may be large, small, or average, when compared to traditional moving costs. Perhaps, the fees that you will be charged should be one of the first things that you should examine. This will allow you to find another New York moving company if you are unable to afford the services of your first choice.

While the overall cost of using a New York moving company is important, it is also important to examine what is included in those fees. The more services that are included, the higher the fees will be, on most occasions. Of course, a New York moving company will transport your belongings from one location to the next; however, they may also perform additional duties. Those duties may include packaging up your belongings or even storing them at an offsite location. If additional services are included in the cost and you do not need to use those services, you are advised against paying for them.

By keeping the above mentioned points in mind, you should be able to find an affordable New York moving company to do business with. The research and careful examination, mentioned above, is important because you will be giving your treasured belongings to people that you do not know.

Making Healthy Life Choices At The Candy Store

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

As children, some of us might remember the trip to the candy store. While the old-fashioned candy stores that sold Snaps, Bun Bars, Horlick’s Malted Milk tablets and Teaberry gum may not be around anymore, we can purchase the sweets we crave online.

As adults, most of us want to make healthy life choices but we don’t want to give up our childhood candy-land dreams. A lot of us are nostalgic about candy. It represents a happier time in our lives when things were easy and life was carefree. But as adults we are watching our waistlines and trying to prevent Type II diabetes. The solution is to purchase sugarless, natural candies and chocolate.

Organic food trends

More people today are interested in organic choices for healthy living. It would be absurd to eat green algae, wheat grass and organic vegetables all day, only to snack on candy loaded with sugar and preservatives at night.

As part of a healthy lifestyle, select natural candy that contains no sugar. You don’t have to be diabetic to enjoy the benefits of sugarless foods.

Chocolate is not the enemy

Some people think they need to give up chocolate as part of a healthy lifestyle. But the opposite is true. Chocolate contains magnesium as well as antioxidants. The fat in chocolate is made from cocoa butter, which contains a heart-healthy form of monounsaturated fat called oleic acid.

Furthermore, chocolate contains healthy flavonoids that protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Finally, as part of your healthy lifestyle, don’t just replace your regular candy with sugarless candy and chocolate. It’s also important to eliminate carbonated beverages from your diet. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Select organic and natural whole foods whenever possible.

And when it’s time for a sweet treat, savor every bite of sugar-free candy and luscious chocolate just like you did when you were a child.

Solving Sports-Related Skin, Hair & Body Grooming for Men

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Sports are the perfect way for men to get in shape and have a good time doing it. But with greater exercise often comes greater challenges to your skin and body, and we’re not just talking about sore muscles here. Learn how you can control and eliminate common men’s grooming and skincare problems as you continue to work towards your fitness goals.

Facial Acne: Exercise and sweat can lead to acne breakouts, as grime accumulates in blocked pores. But you can prevent reoccurring acne with a daily application of an acne treatment containing Benzoyl Peroxide.

Back Acne (Bacne): Shower as soon you’re done working out and regularly exfoliate skin with a scrub brush. Keep hair from hanging on your shoulders and back, and wear exercise clothes that whisk sweat from skin’s surface.

Body Odor: You can’t have exercise without B.O., but you can control it by washing as soon as you’re finished exercising and using a deodorant that doesn’t just mask odors with a heavy scent, but rather targets and neutralizes bacteria.

Sunburn: A match on the courts is a great way to stay in shape, but forget to slap on sunscreen and you’re sprinting towards a world of pain (and future ages spots and wrinkles). Men require a sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB rays and won’t wash away with sweat.

Athlete’s Foot: Caused by moist conditions and friction in your shoe, athlete’s foot is an irritating problem that affects many guys. Keep feet as clean and dry as you can by washing your feet with a cleanser that contains antibacterial ingredients and drying them thoroughly after exercising.

Damaged hair: Swim for long enough and you’ll develop sculpted waist, arms and legs…and brittle hair?! Rinse hair with fresh water before taking a dip (this will cut down on the amount of chlorinated/saltwater absorbed) and immediately after. Wash hair with a gentle shampoo to rebalance moisture levels and protect follicles, and wear a swim cap if you swim regularly.

San Francisco Schools Hire Mcgraw-Hill VP

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

After six months of interviewing applicants nationwide, San Francisco Schools district has filled its top position. Carlos Garcia, Vice President of Urban Markets for McGraw-Hill (educational publishers), has been selected as the next Superintendent of San Francisco Schools. Board members have been seeking a replacement since January after interim Superintendent Gwen Chan announced that she would not return to the post in the fall.

Garcia was voted in due to his experience in San Francisco Schools, strong results as Superintendent of other districts, and good reputation as a fiscal manager. Garcia served both Fresno, California and Clark County, Nevada as Superintendent. From 1988-91 Garcia was principal of San Francisco Schools Horace Mann Middle School. During his tenure the school improved its achievement scores and received recognition for its accomplishments.

According to Board President of San Francisco Schools, Mark Sanchez, ” We chose Mr. Garcia because of his past experience with San Francisco, his strong track record as a superintendent and his understanding of the challenges that our district faces.” The San Francisco Schools have dealt with issues like declining enrollment over the past few years, as families leave for better districts and private schools. Initiatives like the small schools program are one of many that the San Francisco Schools are implementing to reverse this trend. This change in leadership may bring some of these programs into question, although the school board seems confident that Garcia is in line with their priorities.

Thirty applicants were interviewed since January in an attempt to find a new leader for the San Francisco Schools. Garcia’s credentials includes a B.A. from Claremont Men’s College in political science, a M.A. in education from Claremont Graduate school, and an administrative degree from California State University at Fullerton. Parents in San Francisco Schools provided input to the hiring process in the form of both community meetings, and over a thousand surveys, to determine the criteria for their next leader.

Leadership of the San Francisco Schools will have a strong impact on financial spending and program funding. Given pressure to meet national No Child Left Behind standards, administrators in San Francisco Schools are constantly making decisions about how best to allocate funds. California’s poor reputation on educational priorities and spending was recently highlighted by a think tank study that claimed that the state’s educational priorities are in such disarray that the whole system needs an overhaul. While San Francisco Schools leaders may agree with the study, they still need state funding to run their districts.

The fact that Garcia led one of the nation’s largest districts, Clark County, gives the San Francisco Schools reasons to hope that he will use the same financial wisdom in this district. Six of the seven board members voted for Mr. Garcia’s appointment, with the seventh asking for more time to decide. Garcia will begin serving San Francisco Schools on July 16th, 2007.

Your Health Never Takes A Vacation

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Ahh, summertime is here, and it is time for a vacation. It’s time for you and your family, (or just you yourself), to get out there, explore someplace new, visit family and friends, or just go to the beach. So, of course, you pack your necessary clothes, toothbrush, comb, hair dryer, etc., you have everything, right?

How about your weight loss exercise program?

What about your local gym that you go to?

Or the fitness devices you have at home?

Can you use your vacation as a fitness vacation, also?

Did you pack your discipline, too? Because you’ll need it when you go to all of those restaurants you’ll be going to.

Well, if you forgot to pack those (which most people do when they go on vacation), don’t worry, I am here to help you with all of those questions while you are on vacation.

While vacation is for having fun, you should NEVER lose sight of the big picture. And that is to lose weight, stay in shape, changing your lifestyle, etc.

I can hear the excuse train coming already…

“It’s too hard to work out while I’m on vacation.”

“How will I ever eat right when we go out to eat at restaurants the whole time?”

“Where will I work out at?”

Etc. etc. etc.

Always an excuse, right?

First of all, yes, it will probably be more difficult to stay on your fitness regimen while you are on vacation.

I’ll give you that.

But that’s all I will give you.

You can and MUST get it done…many people do it, including myself…so, it can be done.

Inconvenient?…maybe.
Impossible?…Not even close.

There are people in this world who do the most amazing things to survive day in and day out…so before you start complaining that thinking ahead and planning how you will stay fit on your vacation is sooooo hard…just realize that people are always doing bigger and better things.

Now that that’s out of the way…let’s get into the “how” you will manage to stay fit on vacation.

Let me show you how, it’s really not that hard.

Ok, sample scenario…

You and your family are driving to the beach, staying at a nearby hotel for a few days.

Sounds like a basic family vacation, right?

Let’s see what you can do…

1. Stop by a grocery store (there are some by the beach too, you know) and stock up on fruits, vegetables, other assorted healthy snacks (low-fat yogurt, granola, raisins, etc.) to keep in your hotel room as snacks.

2. Also, you can buy bottled water, healthy juices (NOT the ones loaded with added sugar), teas, etc.

3. Most hotels have a small refrigerator (or…just go to the local Walgreen’s and buy a styrofoam cooler to put all of your stuff in). You just have to get ice from your hotel (and change it every day or so).

4. When you do go to restaurants (and there are usually a TON of them wherever you go on vacation)…pick a restaurant that offers a lot of lean meats, fruits, and vegetables.

5. If you need to, eat just enough to tide you over for when you get back to your hotel room…then you can eat from your healthy snacks.

6. Share a healthy chicken, turkey, or fish dish with a member of your family.

7. Stay FAR AWAY from onion rings, french fries, mozzarella sticks, etc.

8. Most hotels have a gym…use it…they also have carpeted floors…use them for doing pushups and other body-weight exercises (more to come on that in the future).

9. Take a brisk walk on the beach in the morning and night…there’s nothing much better than watching a sunrise and sunset while you are exercising.

10. Or, just do this little routine………brisk walk for 2 minutes, do 10 pushups, then 15 jumping jacks, then sprint for 15 seconds….rest for 2 minutes and repeat.

There you go…….I just gave you 10 things you can do to stay fit while on vacation…what other things can you do?

Nothing short of hundreds…maybe thousands.

But it’s about that time.

Let that marinate in your brain for a while…then stop on over to www.fitnesswithchris.com http://www.fitnesswithchris.com for some of the best health and fitness tips you can possibly find. As you should know by now, I’m always here to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. Don’t be afraid to ask me for help, it’s time you turn yourself into the person you’ve always wanted to be.

I’ll talk to you soon.

When Painful Things Happen To Great People

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Sarah Jane was a typical 9 year old girl with a very untypical question. Having just lost her closest friend to cancer, in the midst of her tearful, half hidden face, Sarah Jane sobbed out the question, Why do bad things happen to good people?

Like Sarah Jane, each of us experiences situations where we feel the pains of life’s circumstances. For Sarah Jane it was losing a close friend to cancer, but for many of us it can be the pain experienced when someone spreads hurtful gossip about us, abuses us, betrays us, or simply jerks us around in life. Those circumstances might result in our losing a job, a friend, a love interest, a business deal, or the creation of a rift between family members. The pain we feel is very real, very deep, and sometimes very private. Most people near us don’t understand the scope, or the depth of the pain we carry as a result of the emotional wounding we’ve experienced.

There are varying degrees of pain we often feel in response to situations inflicted upon us by life, or by people. Some levels of pain are small, some are not. For some, there are situations where the wound is so deep, they end up struggling to know how to get out from under the deep inner pain that results. It’s in the midst of a surrounding, choking pain that many people struggle, not knowing what to do, or how to cope.

There are key steps that help us deal with life’s pain. First, we need to privately admit to ourselves, we’ve been hurt, or are hurting! Own it, and recognize that whenever we experience a change in life that results in a loss, no matter how big or small, we will go through a grieving process. It’s important to start at a place of honesty, recognizing your pain for what it is.

Secondly, (and this step in the process, is not easy, for it often goes against our human nature) the next step if the cause of our pain is an offense, is to forgive our offender. By forgiving our offender, we are not letting him or her off the hook as far as consequences are concerned. By forgiving, we’re letting our self off the hook. We are giving up any motivation or thought of revenge. When a person refuses to forgive, they choose to carry the pain, the anger, the bitterness, of the situation around with them every minute of the day and night. The situation becomes an emotional wound that festers like an emotional infection. Until we forgive our offender, our offender ends up owning our emotions.

The third step in our process of responding to life’s deep hurt’s is to find a safe friend and share our pain with them. We all have friends in our lives, but what do I mean by the term safe friend ? Safe friends are friends who listen to you, are empathetic with you, can advise you, but the most important quality in a safe friend, is the person’s ability to respect confidentiality. Not all friends are safe friends . Safe friends are often few and far between. Safe friends can be a current friend, a counselor, a priest, a therapist, a law enforcement officer, someone who’s been through a similar situation, or a person recommended to you by a friend who feels they simply can’t help you but know of a better person who could.

Finally, at some point in our daily life, we need to carry on in life. If we don’t carry on in life, then we’re choosing to let our offender win, and we’re choosing to be our offender’s victim. While this can be difficult to hear when we’re in the depths of a painful experience, being a victim is a choice, it’s a mental state, and it can be terribly crippling. For those caught in a victim mentality, they are in the position of strength, for they can choose to no longer be a victim by removing themselves from the situation. If we are being abused or bullied by a person, and we remove our self from that situation, then our abuser or bullier has no more power over us.

Recently, a woman began to share her story of a serious internal family conflict with her brother. The situation was critical and she shared how she was considering using a gun as a solution against her abusive drug addicted sibling. Her pain was real, as was the abuse, but the use of a gun is never a solution, for it would haunt her in years to come at every family event. Her brother would end up owning her emotions from his grave. For this lady, her solution lay in forgiveness, then seeking out a safe friend in the law enforcement or legal community who could help her establish safe legal boundaries with this sibling. Those boundaries might take on the form of a drug rehabilitation intervention program, perhaps a restraining order, or jail time. While these boundaries might seem harsh for a family member to consider, in the presence of illegal drugs, harsh steps and strong boundaries must be respected. The establishing of proper boundaries is always a healthy life direction, and the best way for people to remove themselves from the role of a victim.

When life really hurts, there are positive solutions that empower us to live life to the fullest in spite of our wounding. As with Sarah Jane, in time, we can bounce back, we can smile again, we can laugh, and we can rise above the hurt we carry deep inside.

Proper Pet Obedience - How to Make Them Listen and be Obedient

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Having a dog as a pet can be very dignified, if the ill-favored is disciplined with the proper training right from the very start. Dogs, approximative humans are same social beings wherein the animal can be bred and trained with good behavior. Obedience training for your pet dog is a requisite as it can bring excellent mental exercise wherein the animal can adapt to some circumstances.

Obedience training for your dog is like communicating with the animal teaching them what is right and wrong. There will be times that your dog can shred anything in its path or randomly go anywhere in your house. Time cede come that you will move that the animal doesn’t know any souped up since your pet dog didn’t posses the obedience training while the animal was still young, it’s not too late to teach the dog. Since some of the obedience guidance may not determine the dog’s overall behavioral problems. However, it can certainly help to solve some of the problems.

It’s stated earlier that the abundantly essential ability required in dog obedience guidance is to have effective description between you and the animal. In applying effective communication with your dog, this would enable the animal to obey some of the commands like ‘come, ‘ ‘heel, ‘ ’sit, ‘ ’stay. ‘ Make sure that the obedience training lessons you’re giving to your lover pet dog are not drab and worthwhile.

Definitely for dog obedience trainers, there are two popular and effective styles that can body applied for the training. The two ways are the collar / leash and reward training. Reward training is less intense due to to the kind of path of the collar / leash training. In the honorarium approach, the pet dog is rewarded after it was encouraged for doing some of the commands. Remember that the learning process will possibly be faster if you presentation the dog for fine behavior. Also your dog can acknowledge the praising you’re giving. It’s likely that your dog will always follow all your commands. However, obedience training sessions must be constant and short as your dog’s behavior may change anytime. So having short and bent training sessions will be a good idea.

If your pet is still a puppy, it can give you lots of advantages when teaching obedience lessons. It’s because teaching a puppy is easier than grown - up dogs. Even if the puppies still don’t recognize that they have names, they can also respond to master’s command. If you wish that your puppy only listens to you, then don’t let the animal play with other people except you. If you allow the puppy to play for a longer time with its toys, your pet will start to bark and growl every time the toys are taken away.

Heavier important part of dog obedience teaching is that nobody will be unhappy when you’re out shelter the dog with many people swarming around the animal. By simply applying some of the dog commands properly, you won’t keep to pain that the dog will bite someone or just simply run directly when frightened. Even if you’ve trained the dog wherefore, you should also ovation the animal. After all, choosing him is not his problem as the dog could not choose you. So if you’re not treating the dog nicely, it’s possible that your dog will move away or stay unhappy.

Finally, dogs are and entitled with utmost love and compassion. Making them feel as part of the down home is something that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

The 10-24-7 Rule - Learning Piano Music The Easy Way!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

As a professional concert pianist I often have people ask me, I’m in my 50’s is it too late to learn piano? Well, there is no simple answer to this question since everyone’s capacity to learn and everyone’s passion to learn is different.

But, based on my experience it is never too late. However, it is absolutely imperative that you Start Learning Now! Why? Because, a very wise man once told me, if you’re not learning you’re dying. You see, life is all about learning. It’s what gives us reason to live. Can you think of anything better about life than the new experiences, relationships and wisdom that comes from learning? So, if you have any passion at all for learning to play piano music then I highly reccommend that you start right away.

The most important question you should be asking youself is; How can I learn faster and retain more information?

Do you know what most people don’t understand about the learning process? It’s not how much information can you cram into your head at one time but, how much information you can actually retain that causes you to learn faster and more efficiently. What happens is; people inevitably try to tackle all at once the incredible amount of work that it takes to play the piano. Not only is that impossible to do, but it’s not much fun either. And, that’s why most people give up after only trying for a short period of time.

Let’s talk about the way most people were taught to learn. Think back for a moment to when you were in school. Do you remember cramming for an exam? Most people certainly remember the anxiety associated with it. You cram as much information as you can into your head in a very short period of time, hoping to get a good grade on your exam. So, what would happen 2 weeks after taking the exam if you had to take it again? How much would you remember? Not much at all I’m sure! That’s why learning this way is so painful because you’re never able to show consistent long term retention.

Now, imagine for a moment that you applied this technique of learning to the piano. You cram for 2 weeks as much information as you can get into your brain about a piece of piano music. Then, you stop practicing for 2 weeks. Then, you go back and try to play what you learned. How much do you think you could get right? Based on my experience, Almost Nothing!

In my line of work I am responsible for not only remembering a minimum of 1.5 hours of piano music for every concert I perform but, I have to perform it flawlessly. Is this possible? Yes it is! But, not by learning the way most people learn. You see, there is a formula that works best for learning to play piano music and it’s the same formula that works for learning anything worthwhile. And, here it is….

10-24-7

What does this mean? Well, 10 stands for the amount of energy you put into learning what it is you’re learning. How many things can you learn at once? One! So get rid of that big pile of music sitting on the piano because that just represents stress! You can’t possibly learn all that anyway. So, just learn one thing at a time and do it at a level 10 which is; giving 100% of your energy until you can play it without thinking.

Then, do the same thing again in 24 hours. At a level 10 (100% of your energy), learn the same single thing you just learned the day before. Then, in 7 days do it again and I promise you that your retention rate for that one thing you learned will go up by 85%. Is this possible? Yes! That’s how I’m able to perform as many concerts as I do and never take a sheet of music with me on stage. I learn one thing at a time. But, once I learn it, I don’t forget it…ever!

There’s a term we use for this type of learning and it’s called accelerated learning techniques or advanced learning techniques. It’s what I teach in my seminars because it’s what works best for me and for the hundreds of people I’ve taught it to. So, if you want to learn piano music, even if it’s for the first time, follow my example. Use the 10-24-7 approach, you won’t regret it.

If piano music is your passion, check out Paul Tobey’s website at www.paultobey.com http://www.paultobey.com . There you will find free downloadable piano music for you enjoyment.
